Shares Manager - Bulk Edit and Copy Windows Shares

Latest version: v1.0.2

Shares Manager is a free utility designed to help network administrators manage Windows shares quickly, safely, and in bulk.

It provides a powerful set of tools for editing, creating, copying and maintaining shares across servers, saving significant time compared to using the standard Windows management tools.

Originally created to meet the needs of network managers handling large numbers of shares, Shares Manager brings all essential share management tasks into one place, making it easy to update attributes, fix incorrect paths, migrate shares between servers, and create new shares from directory structures.

Why network administrators use Shares Manager

Shares Manager provides capabilities that Windows does not offer directly, such as editing the actual share name and local path. It also allows bulk operations that would otherwise require repetitive manual work.

Bulk Share Creation

You can generate shares automatically from directory structures. For example, given the following folders:

Drive Icon D:
Line Icon Folder Icon Users
Line Icon Folder Icon JoeBloggs
Line Icon Folder Icon JohnSmith
Line Icon Folder Icon Freddie

Shares Manager can create shares for each directory and automatically assign permissions such as:

  • Domain Admins
  • The directory name (for example, JoeBloggs)

This makes it ideal for provisioning home directories or departmental shares.

Copy Shares Between Servers

Shares Manager can copy all shares from one server to another, including:

  • Share names
  • Paths
  • Comments
  • Maximum users
  • Security settings

If the destination server uses different folder paths, you can specify a new base path during the copy process. This is especially useful when migrating to new servers.

Note: The destination directories must already exist before copying shares. For copying files and permissions, see FileSystem Utilities.
